Franklin is located in Macon County within the Nantahala National Forest, between Almond and Highlands North Carolina. This quaint town sits along Highway 28 on the banks of the Little Tennessee River near Cullasaja River Gorge, Otto, and the Scaly Mountain Ski Area. Franklin is best known for its gem mines, history and heritage, and for the natural beauty of the surrounding mountain ranges.

Franklin NC, is the County Seat of Macon County, and is one of the best kept secret destinations in the North Carolina Mountains. The year-round population in Macon County is close 35,000, but that number doubles during the summer months.
Located at approximately 2,300 feet in elevation, in the heart of the Little Tennessee River Valley, Franklin NC is protected to the east and west by the Cowee and Nantahala ranges of the Appalachians. Because Franklin NC is surrounded by US Forest Service land, it will never be able to "grow" into a sprawling area such as Asheville. Visitors to the Franklin area are surprised to find out that more varieties of gems come out of the Franklin area than anywhere else in the world! Franklin is a great town, yes small, but that is part of the reason the "magic" is here.. People are friendly, wave to one another in their cars and say hello to each other in passing! The weather in Franklin is never severe and we have 4 distinct seasons. Franklin NC receives a minimal amount of snowfall and the average temperatures in January are in the 40's. Summers are mild with average temperature in August in the 70's.

Franklin is a vacation, second home, relocation and retirement destination. The town is centrally located within an easy drive to a number larger city centers. Just two-hours away are Atlanta, GA, Knoxville, TN and Greenville, SC. Franklin is only an hour away from Gatlinburg, TN and Asheville, NC, and less than an hour away from the casinos in Cherokee NC.
Beacuse a high percentage of Macon County is national forest there are numerous outdoor recreational activities that take place year round. Some of the more popular activities include whitewater rafting, canoeing/kayaking, fishing, water skiing, snow skiing, horseback riding, hiking, exploring the area's many waterfalls, bicycling, motor biking, camping, RVing, gem mining, to name a few.
